Default Gaming - YOUR Origins and Influences

I was just in another thread and the topic shifted over to old school gaming. So I started to reflect ... back ... back ... WAAAY back ... about some of my fond childhood memories and gaming ... and I thought that perhaps instead of finding out where everyone lived ... or what they did to pay for their habits ... or what their sign was ... it would be far more insightful if we all spoke out on something which we had much more of a choice over ...

So ... with that in mind ... not only would I like to hear what your first gaming system was ... but also some of the titles which you remember fondly ...

For myself ... there are several systems I remember playing ...
  • Intellivision ... The one that inspired this thread ... the discussion actually made me remember hating the guy you see to the left ... with his shifty eyes, you never could tell if he was actually dealing from the bottom of the deck
  • Comodore 64 ... good times playing Commando and GI Joe ...
  • Sega Master System ... I always remember telling the Nintendo kids how my light gun was WAY better than theirs ... hoooo boy, I wasn't a very bright child was I?
  • Sega Genesis ... Two Words ... NHL ... 94 ...
  • SNES ... Finding out that you had discovered all 96 worlds in Mario ... I just did that again earlier this year on the GBA ... sweet

So ... what fond memories do you have of games and systems gone by?

SNES, the hundreds of hours spent beating FF3 over and over again.

I remember my family saving up so we could afford to get a refurbished NES (we were fairly desititute at the time) and being absolutely enthralled by the original mario brothers and TMNT game.

Then came the SNES. That thing was my crack for too long to even consider it. I started out with, "The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare" or whatever it was called then moved on to super metroid.

My uncle had a ton of SNES games so he'd let me borrow em til I beat em, then i'd get other ones.

Then he gave me Final Fantasy III (american), which lead to FFII and Chrono Trigger.

Ah the good ol' days.

I know, I still play that game to this day. It just has such an impressive story for an SNES title.

The worlds ends, then you realize the game's only half over....

I can't recall ... just because of the Japanese / North American numbering system ... was that the one with the opera?

It had a better story than any FF made on PS or PS2

yes, FF3 (american) was the one with the opera.

Locke, Terra, Shadow, Cyan, etc.

I haven't ever really had a chance to play any of the PS or PS2 incarnations, so I can't say for sure on my end, but I do know that no game has held me quite as steadfastly as that game.

I actually stopped sleeping for 48 hours straight to play the game. It's the only time i've ever done such a thing.

ahhh yes I remember it well and only the internet was available back then PONG would have taken over the world and to this day we would have international PONG tournaments.... well maybe not.

I went on to the Intellivision and the Comodore, then the Amiga system then Nintendo then just right into computers

I've been a computer gamer for as long as I can rember, five years old playing Duke Nukem (the original) and Commander Keen on an, at the time, brand spanking new 386. State of the art graphics! Colors! Sound!

Ah... the good old days of baseboard.

Nintendo - Mario, Duckhunt (yay!), Zelda (I loved that map so much that I cried when it was lost), TMNT! and Double Dragon

Sega Genesis - Street Fighter 2&3, the beginning of my love for 2D fighting games (and Chun-Li and Cammy), Sonic (Tails is better!)

Sega Saturn - Nights, Panzer Dragoon, Street Fighter Alpha, first time playing Tomb Raider.

Playstation - Final Fantasy 7, first RPG (besides Zelda, but that's RTS), loved the series and genre after.

I do have to admit ... I did enjoy the story in FFVII ... and that game was the inspiration for me to buy a PS ... I'm sure the debate will be between III and VII as to which is the favourite in most people's hearts ...

Personally ... I'd say VII ... only because when I bought that PS my girlfriend didn't give me any for a month ... so I had to love that game instead ...

I gotta say honestly ... the best version of Street Fighter I have EVER seen for a console was actually on the 3DO ... they released Super SF2 ... I was working at EB at the time ... we ended up dragging a TV out to the front counter and just playing that all day long ...

My first gaming experience was when I was at my dads work and he pulled out a 5 1/2" floppy and put it in a Apple IIe

King's Quest...

/climb tree

If you watch the movie Big you will know what game I am talking about hehe.

After that it was NES and super Mario bros and tecmo football. Oh and after seeing "The Wizard" in the theaters when I was like 8 I was so excited because Mario brothers 3 wasn't out yet and it was featured in that movie!

Damn man ... all these memories coming back to me ... you mention Pitfall and the first thing I think of is that tune they play ... when he swings on the rope? And that god awful noise when you get run over by the logs ...

Heh heh heh ... hands up ... who saw 'The Wizard' and then bugged the hell outta their parents to get them a Power Glove? OHHHHH ... my little argument about the better light gun with the Sega Master System didn't hold much water against THAT peripheral ... again ... not a smart kid ...

How can you say it was the worst game ever? Just because you're trampling food down with your dirty shoes while being chased by a very phalic sausage?

I won't even tell you what the pickle looks like ...
